As with most cities in New Jersey and in the suburbs, traffic is a problem, but avoiding rush hour makes a big difference. Visitors should note that flooding in Hackenzac (and many neighboring towns, especially in southern Bergen) is a major problem. If a 15-minute mudslide overflows the streets, and keeps falling for a few hours, many roads, especially River Street, will never be able to pass. If you can avoid driving during rain or flooding, avoid it. Otherwise, try the high ground road to the top-of-the-mountain street.
